Flying Fever

I just got back from a trip to Mumbai. With the weather playing the trick and whipping around gust and rain - I am really living it up in shivers till now.

The flight just made it to Goa in safety, as for me - I was sitting right next to the Devil himself on the flight. With the dark clouds & lightening through airplane window, I could not touch the appetizing dinner nor the cookies. The craft lurched, and the nervous traveler I am, I skipped beats. Wish my work never made me travel so much. If Mumbai was flooded, the clouds above spewed terror. If the mere mortals in ‘Amchi Mumbai’ were digging out the umbrellas and oars, frightened souls like me felt terrorized being closer to heaven. Any sudden natural disaster would send me straight to heaven, on travel without tickets!

Now that I am back to the comfort of home and watching the gentle sea rock the shores, I was wondering. Should the airlines give insurance cover to the passengers? Although air travel in India has become as regular as shuttle service – and domestic airports resemble a local railway station in peak hours. Still, are the lives of the passengers valued? Are their lives worth turbulent rides? Not that I know the rules of the land and legal intricacies of flying – but still I would like to know if I have entrusted my time and life to someone one for a few hours, can I rely on them to make an honest effort to take care of the same??

Thank God and the dear Pilot who brought me home to safety.

in my last flight (i will not tell you the name. only thing i can say that it is an indian no-frills arilines) it was shaky flight. i thought it is my last day on earth. jesus it was the scariest day of my life. the shaking of the plane was so bad because of a thunder storm. during that time i thought of my two babies waiting at home and wished that i had left them more money. i wished to call up my husband and tell him to take real good care of the babies. it was damn scary. it is strange that how a simple flight can take u near death and make u see the reality of life. i feel insurance before such scary flights will be a great option. it can be made important for people with dependents.

hi babe,
how are you doing? life is good. flying is my passion. i dont think insurance is required while flying. airlines are very safe these days. pilots are well trained. they risk their own lives for the safety of passengers. insurance would mean an insult to them.
so no insurance is required.

hello tanushree. wow u are a journalist. i always wanted to become one. i really admire barkha dutt. who is you favorite journalist?

ok now coming to airline insurance for passengers. yes it is a very good idea. pilots of domestic airlines drink and fly. i heard this news. they are irresponsible. this happened with pilots of air deccan. pay less and fly risky airlines but then u should get insured and fly. what do you think?

please let me know how to become a journalist...

hi tanu u have a great space. you have written a great and thought inspiring blog. Yes I think insurance should be made mandatory on airlines. Life is unpredictable. Though air travel is so much safer but still I feel anything and happen anytime.

am so scared to travel by domestic airlines. international airlines are so much better and safer. even the pilots are so much more handsome ;-) in fact the air crew is mor friendly and reliable.

Hi Tanushree,
People are debating about having insurance. I don’t think so it is really necessary. Airlines are not forcing anybody to travel through them. You should choose better means to travel......"Trains"… which are nowadays very safe. :) You can reach on time with full comfort. Moreover they are very cheap.

I think we are demanding too much…what do you say?

surely, getting insured while travelling will be good. Nothing like it, at least our families will be benefitted, if something goes wrong. I think airlines should provide insurance to their customers.

Tanushree,

…Insurance… Sound’s interesting…. Let's hope our aviation industry should implement some strong rules & regulations, which may saves human lives. Paying money is not the thing, which everybody is looking at.

We want our dear ones to be safe, that's it! We all know life is uncertain, but we cannot take things lightly.

Absolutely right! Customers should get insurance to their customers. In India, people don't learn from their mistakes. They do mistakes, create a mess, debate and then forget. They don’t learn even a single thing from it. LIVE example is Mumbai rain. Last year, rain created a mess, now the position is same this year. NO LEARNING’S.

Also in the past we have seen airlines make mistakes. Why we suffer from their mistakes. They should be penalized for any accident, so that they cannot play with human lives. Till the time they have some fear of paying back to their customers in case of accidents, they will not react.

I hope we will get insurance in near future.

To all the frequent flyers Happy flying!

Cheers, Shruti

I really don’t know what happen to me maybe without realizing Movies had their impact in me …unconsciously
